Zone Startups India, a partnership between the Bombay Stock Exchange, Ryerson University, Ryerson Futures and Simon Fraser University helps entrepreneurs expand into India and Canada, focusing on entrepreneurship development and professional development education.

The first major initiative was the launch of ‘The Next Big Idea’ contest, supported by the Ontario government. “The Next Big Idea” seeks to discover India’s most innovative companies looking to use a presence in Toronto as a way to expand to North America. The winners received the opportunity to incubate their company for three weeks in the DMZ business incubator at Ryerson University, including flights and hotels. Using the DMZ as a landing pad, the entrepreneurs received mentorship, business development advice and international experience.

The inaugural winners were Citrus Payment Solutions and Ingenuity Ventures, which have had a great experience, including raising follow-on money upon their return to India. Citrus offers online payment services that are simple and convenient for merchants and consumers. Ingenuity Ventures is an augmented video indexing technology and web platform providing a unique way of marketing and advertising products or services via interactive media and social networking.

Satyan Kothari, Citrus Payment Solutions:

“Zone Startups India is how a great incubator should be — to encourage more and more people to take that leap of faith and become entrepreneurs and do what they’ve always dreamt of doing.”

“This kind of facility and setting with an advisory and mentorship network is incredible. And it’s probably one of the most thought out, well-rounded endeavours.”
